I think the big ISPs will be doing more of this as time goes on: AOL Time Warner's Road Runner cable-modem service implements a new policy to block suspected spammers. But the campaign is running over some innocent victims along the way. [CNET News.com] The strategy is intended to prevent spammers from setting up spam email servers on broadband ISP accounts (without their service provider's permission) by requiring that email sent through Time Warner's network is coming from an IP address with a valid reverse lookup. I like this kind of anti-spam effort. Legitimate small business users should not have difficulty getting their DNS configured to correctly support reverse lookup on their domains. And there is a lot of spam with either forged headers or is coming from domains where the reverse lookup does not match the originating address. It will be interesting to see if other ISPs follow the lead.
