Site of the Day: OurMedia.org

"It's the users, Big Media."

Over the past several months, I have been noticing a trend toward internet-community-improved media and search. In other words, the users are adding value to the content on the web.

For instance, Furl.net and del.icio.us are two shared bookmarking systems that work by assisting the most linked pages to bubble to the surface. Both Furl.net and del.icio.us have been getting a lot of blogging press and will probably start attracting the attention of the regular press as well.

Over the last several months, the larger photo sharing sites have been bought by Yahoo, HP, and others.

Over the last several months, the most successful blogging service and software providers have been bought several large search companies.

The iTunes music store allows its users to suggest playlists, and this ads value to the iTunes store and helps iTunes sell more music.

Now there's OurMedia.org. OurMedia.org is an open-source attempt to enable anyone to share multimedia content that they have created. I predict that it won't be long before OurMedia.org starts getting a lot of attention.

What do all these sites have in common? The content is created by their users, not by big media. Or the users add value to the content by promoting the good stuff. As time goes on, the content is getting better, and the best content bubbles to the top.

If I were Big Media, these trends would be getting my attention.
