You probably have a few of those handy USB thumb drives laying around. They're great for saving files that you want to have with you at all times. But did you ever wonder what would happen if you accidentally lost one of those little thumb drives with your important files or private information on it?
With Apple's Disk Utility (look in Applications > Utilities) you can create an encrypted disk image on your thumb drive and store your important files in the encrypted portion.
The idea is that even if you lose your thumb drive, your sensitive information is protected unless someone can guess your password. Disk Utility can also help you create a secure password with the "Password Assistant" (click the little key icon to the right of the password box when you create your password to access the password assistant). Be sure to create a password that is easy to remember but still secure. If you lose your password, you will not be able to access the data on your encrypted disk image.
Here's a link to an article describing the process... look for the heading that begins with "Secure Disk Images with Disk Utility".
